"To teach people to access and use the power of the mind/body connection for healing", is the mission statement of The Academy for Guided Imagery.

Their vision states: "We imagine a health care system that encourages the patient/client to take a responsible and active role in the healing process. We imagine patients/clients actively accessing and using their innate healing abilities through the power of the mind/body connection. We imagine a whole new breed of health care providers - those who have developed special expertise that allows them to skillfully support the healing potential of their clients. We imagine these Interactive Healing Guides to be integral members of every health care team in America."

These words, written by the co-founders of the Academy, Marty Rossman, MD and David Bresler, PhD, renew my faith in the medical profession. I feel honored to be part of an organization that holds to the truth that we have the knowledge and wisdom within us to heal and return to wholeness.

Imagery is a powerful and ancient language of the mind. Long before we had words we had images. These images can be accessed through any of the five senses: sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. Like images while daydreaming, where anything is possible, Interactive Guided Imagery (IGI) allows you to consciously interact with your innate intuition.

In the process of an IGI session, you are guided through a progressive relaxation to a comfortable and restful state. In the early explorations, you learn to navigate in this new territory by finding a special inner place, one of peace and safety, where compassion, love and wisdom are available. From this place you can invite an image of a wise and loving figure that knows you well. This "inner advisor/healer/higher self" may often accompany you as you explore and interact with other images.

For example, from this safe place, you may want to invite an image of a symptom, illness, concern or issue that you'd like to explore and perhaps understand more about. In your imagination you can give this image a voice, ask it why it has appeared and what it wants to tell you. Listening to the answers may uncover the meaning and relevance of your issue. You thus gain valuable insights and information that can lead to a positive resolution. There are also grounding techniques that can incorporate this wisdom into your daily life.

Being an Imagery Guide is giving me one more powerful tool to help my clients accomplish their goals. During guided imagery sessions I've watched people receive insight after insight that reveals to them missing pieces of the puzzle, lessons to be learned and next steps to be taken in their healing process. These messages from the unconscious mind are waiting to be tapped and IGI facilitates this awakening beautifully. It teaches you how to go within and direct your attention to skillfully dialogue with your inner wisdom. It can take you on a profound journey of self-discovery, transformational awareness and healing.

It's a joy to incorporate Interactive Guided Imagery into my practice. It has far-reaching implications and effectiveness in helping to heal such areas as abuse, addictions, anxiety and fear, chronic illness and pain, depression, grief and loss, immune disorders, stress, self-esteem issues, relationship issues, right livelihood and career goals, by using the power of the mind/body connection.
